Cuyahoga County, Ohio

Long before the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame existed in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, it existed in the minds of leaders in the music industry who joined together to celebrate the music of musicians who changed the world. The first induction dinner was held at New York’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in January, 1986; inductees included Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and Little Richard.

In a public poll conducted by USA Today to determine the public view on where the Hall of Fame should be located, Cleveland – Cuyahoga County’s county seat – ranked number one, and was ultimately chosen as the museum’s permanent home.

World-renowned architect I.M. Pei was chosen to design the Museum, confessing “I didn’t know a thing about rock and roll.” Nevertheless, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum opened its doors in 1995 on the shores of Lake Erie in downtown Cleveland with the goal of educating visitors, fans and scholars from around the world about the history and continuing significance of rock and roll music. Since the Museum’s opening it has welcomed nearly eight million visitors.

Cuyahoga County is the most populous county in Ohio. The county is part of Greater Cleveland, a metropolitan area, and Northeast Ohio, a thirteen-county region, joined together in economic development initiatives.

The county is named after the Native American word Cuyahoga, which means “crooked river.” The county has a total area of 1,246 square miles, of which 787 square miles is water from the Cuyahoga River. A portion of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located in the southeastern portion of the county. Across Lake Erie lies Chatham-Kent and Elgin County, Ontario, Canada.
Notable residents of Cuyahoga County include former US President James A. Garfield.
