Montgomery County, Ohio

Montgomery County, Ohio has a long tradition of innovation. The county seat, Dayton, has been the location of many inventions since the 1870s and had more granted patents than any other city in 1890. The Wright Brothers started dreaming of soaring in the skies here, and that desire to dream big persists. Dayton is the home of invention, and several aerospace, industrial, and engineering research is done in this dynamic city.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is located in the county and is home to the 88th Air Base Wing. The base was established in 1917 as two stations: Wilbur Wright Field and McCook Field. The two merged in 1948. It is a large, diverse, and complex Air Force Base. The Air Force Institute of Technology and the National Museum of the United State Air Force are located in base.

Although the Wright Brothers are probably the most famous of Montgomery County’s residents, several other inventors lived here, including Charles F. Kettering. As the head of research for General Motors from 1920 to 1947, Kettering invented Freon and Duco lacquers and enamels – the first colored paints for mass-produced automobiles. He also invented the world’s first aerial missile and helped the advancement of lightweight two-stroke diesel engines. In 1883, another Dayton resident, James Ritty, invented the cash register. Fellow Dayton resident John H. Patterson purchased several of these machines for his retail store from the National Manufacturing Company. He bought both the company and the patent and renamed the company the National Cash Register Company, a major company that still exists today.

In addition to Dayton, other cities in Montgomery County include Union, Oakwood, Carlisle, Centerville, Englewood, and Miamisburg. Villages include Germantown and Verona, and townships include Jefferson Township, Butler Township, Harrison Township, and Clay Township.

In addition to the Air Force Institute of Technology, other colleges and universities include the Kettering College of Medical Arts, the University of Dayton, Wright State University, and Sinclair College.
