Perched above the Ohio and Erie Canal, Summit County spreads out from its peak, the highest elevation in the county, in rolling green hills dotted with quaint villages, small picturesque towns, and larger cities. The largest of these cities, Akron, is also the county seat.
As the heart of the county and one of the largest cities in Ohio, Akron sits about 39 miles south of Lake Erie. Known for its research in polymers, this city contains nearly 100 polymer-based companies. The University of Akron contains the Goodyear Polymer Center and a college of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. Akron is located on the Cuyahoga River near the Cuyahoga Falls.
Attractions in Akron include the Akron Zoo, which is home to over 700 animals. One of the exhibits features endangered Humbolt penguins, medium-sized penguins that live along the coast of Peru and Chile. The unique Akron Art Museum is a combination of a 19th century historical building with an ultra-modern glass and steel structure. The Cuyahoga Falls Riverfront Square District features a scenic boardwalk, exciting and unique restaurants, a pedestrian mall, and boat rides. Events include a variety of festivals and concerts.
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a 51-mile stretch of green space between Akron and Cleveland. It is Ohio’s only national park and it includes several hiking and biking trails, waterfalls, caves, and the Cuyahoga River. The park also features the Stanford House, a historic farmhouse built in the 1830s. Today, it serves as a park lodge.
Another historic home, Hale Farm and Village, includes a living history museum with artisans displaying skills such as candle making, blacksmithing, spinning, and glass blowing. John Brown, a famous abolitionist, also had a home in Summit County. Built in the 1830s, his home is now a museum. Other sites include Akron Civic Theater, the Goodyear World of Rubber Museum, and Quaker Square – renovated Quaker Oats factory buildings that now house restaurants, boutiques, shops, and University of Akron student housing.
