Oklahoma City at a Glance
Heritage Hills East Neighborhood
Heritage Hills East is a neighborhood where development began in 1902. In the beginning, it was halfway between the new town of Oklahoma City and the state capitol building. Now, the city has grown up around the old suburb, revamping it into an urban neighborhood that retains a traditional charm.
Located between the grander homes of Mesta Park and the Centennial Expressway, Heritage Hills East holds a mix of single-family homes, apartment buildings old and new, and a few condominiums.
The zip code for Heritage Hills East is 73103. The small neighborhood is bound on the north by busy Northwest 23rd Street. On the east, the boundary is North Broadway, which curves around the long grassy oval of Winans Park. On the south, Northwest 14th Street is the boundary, and on the west, the neighborhood border is North Robinson Avenue.
Much of Heritage Hills East holds single-family homes in sturdy Prairie style, along with many Craftsman style bungalows. Some stand behind lawns at street level, while others are set slightly above the sidewalk behind sloping lawns or short retaining walls. The neighborhood also holds a few vintage duplexes. Older apartment buildings are found in Heritage Hills East, too, along with apartment buildings and condominiums of more modern style.
The Oklahoma Capitol Building is less than a mile east of Heritage Hills. Two miles or so beyond it to the northeast is Oklahoma’s acclaimed zoo. Among its many exhibits is the Oklahoma Trails habitat, which shelters many of the state’s native animals. These include the black bear, the bison, and the river otter. Like Heritage Hills East, construction on the zoo began at the beginning of the twentieth century, and like the deep-rooted neighborhood, it preserves treasures from Oklahoma’s past.
