Long before Oklahoma became a state, the Cherokee were moved onto the land after the Trail of Tears. They established the city in 1843, and today Tahlequah is the capital of the Cherokee Nation and the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians. It is situated in the heart of the Illinois River Valley in the foothills of the Ozarks. Lake Tenkiller and Lake Fort Gibson add beauty to the area in addition to being popular locations for outdoor fun.

Tahlequah is a unique city with a rich history. The Original Historic Townsite District is the location of the original 160-acre capitol site. It is a beautiful area that features walking and driving tours. The Tahlequah History Trail follows the creek through parks and into downtown. The Cherokee Heritage Center is a must-see for residents and tourists alike. The museum contains a permanent Trail of Tears exhibit, as well as rotating exhibits and two villages. The Murrell Home, built in 1845, is Oklahoma’s only surviving antebellum home. It offers tours and many special events. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located about three miles south of Tahlequah.

In addition to its fascinating history, Tahlequah is home to restaurants, galleries, shops, antique stores, and Northeastern State University. Rent an apartment in Tahlequah and enjoy the beautiful landscape and elegant downtown. Enjoy Lake Tenkiller’s SCUBA park, go boating or fishing on the lake or on the Illinois River, or go camping and hiking in the Ozark Mountains.
