Kendall-Whittier Neighborhood

The frame-built, early-fifties homes in this neighborhood are neat and well maintained. Kendall-Whittier, in the northeast area of Tulsa, Oklahoma, extends north from Interstate 244 to the Interstate 75 Cherokee Expressway. Local businesses and a community center and park are within walking distance. Springdale Shopping Center on the northwest corner of Pine and Lewis has a Save-A-Lot grocery store, beauty, clothing and shoe stores, an insurance agency, and other service businesses.

The Springdale Park and Recreation Center on Pine Street is a 9.5-acre site that provides neighborhood families with social, educational, holiday, and special events, as well as sports programs such as open gym, a pool table, youth day camp, and even special Senior Citizen events. The playground area has toys, swings, a sports field, tennis and basketball courts, a jogging trail, picnic tables, and a small spray pool.

The city of Tulsa set aside 2,800 acres north of the Tulsa International Airport to create Mohawk Park, just five miles north of Kendall-Whittier. It includes the Oxley Nature Center, the Tulsa Zoo, and the Mohawk Park Golf Course. The park area has hiking, walking and biking trails, and fishing, boating, and picnic areas.

The Tulsa Zoo covers 84 acres of Mohawk Park. There are more than 2,800 animals including many rare and endangered species. The zoo has a variety of exhibits that allow the animals to reside in settings duplicating their natural habitats. The zoo also has an educational area with hands-on exhibits for learning experiences about the world of nature.

The Oxley Nature Center has 800 acres devoted to nature study. There is an interactive library and maps of trails for self-guided walks through the area to observe the birds and wildlife.
