Arlington Heights Neighborhood

Arlington Heights is a gracious old neighborhood perched above downtown Portland. Set on forested slopes, with many old growth street trees, the upscale area has stunning views of the city and its surrounding mountains. In addition, people who live in Arlington Heights can walk downhill to work and then take a tram or shuttle home.

The zip code for Arlington Heights is 97201. The small neighborhood of about 700 residents is completely surrounded by parkland, and sits on the shoulder of the West Hills. It is south of West Burnside road and west of Southwest Vista Avenue.

Most of the homes in Arlington Heights were built before 1939, some long before. One common architectural style in the area is Old Portland. This style, also called Foursquare, is large and solid looking, with two stories and a central dormer. Old Portland houses are built on square foundations and usually have large front porches and open eaves.

Other neighborhood styles include Cape Cod, Dutch Colonial and Portland Bungalow. In Portland, a bungalow is a small Arts and Crafts house enriched with artisan details. The neighborhood includes examples of more modern styles too, and all the homes are set in lush woodland gardens.

Residents of Arlington Heights have access to miles of trails, paths and rustic stairways, which lead to Hoyt Arboretum, the Japanese Garden, the Veterans’ Memorial and the famous Rose Test Gardens. Arlington Heights is one of the city’s finest areas, and a neighborhood that burnishes Portland’s reputation as a magnificent place to live.
