Cully Neighborhood

Thomas Cully, originally an Englishman, was man of many occupations. After immigrating to the US and becoming a Texas Ranger, Cully moved to Portland and became a stonemason and, for a brief period, a gold miner during the California gold rush. This North Portland neighborhood is named for him and the large family he raised here.

The Cully neighborhood has a relaxed, rural feel. Many neighborhood streets have no sidewalks. Peaceful, tree-shaded lanes with well-kept homes and lush landscaping contrast with raucous commercial areas. Major streets have modern apartments and condominiums, as well as older single-family homes. A variety of industrial facilities cluster at the north end of the neighborhood.

The north border of the Cully neighborhood is Cornfoot Road, with the Portland International Airport beyond. The east boundary is Northeast 82nd Street, and the south boundaries are Northeast Prescott Street and Fremont Street. Northeast Forty-Second Avenue is the west boundary. The zip code is 97218.

Harvey Scott and Rigler are the local public kindergarten to eighth grade elementary schools. Rigler has a community garden. Trinity Lutheran School is a local private school that offers classes beginning with pre-K. The area secondary school is Madison High School.

Whitaker Ponds Park buffers the neighborhood from the airport. It features ponds, wetlands, and a gazebo with a roof of grasses and wildflowers. A black cottonwood grove stands near a wildflower meadow, and there is a garden featuring some of the plants that Lewis and Clark saw on their journey west. One dock is a pond-viewing site, and another is a kayak launch for paddles through the Columbia Slough.

Rocky Butte is southwest of the neighborhood, near the intersection of highways I-205 and I-84. An extinct volcano within the city limits, Rocky Butte is both a city and a state park. Beautified with quarried stonework, the top has panoramic views of Mount Hood and the Cascades.
