Portland at a Glance
Maplewood Neighborhood
The Maplewood Neighborhood covers rolling hills and lush green areas in southwest Portland. The April Hill City Park is the center piece of the neighborhood. The northwest is bordered by the Vermont Creek, and the southwest corner is crossed by Woods Creek, both tributaries of the Tualatin River and Fanno Creek. Cape Cod, Ranch, and Contemporary style homes lay hidden among these forest and hills less the five miles from downtown Portland.
The neighborhood boundaries include Southwest Vermont Street on the north, Southwest 45th Avenue on the east, and Southwest Multnomah Boulevard on the south.
The shopping district along the Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway lies north of the Maplewood Neighborhood. Starbucks and the Portland Athletic Club are located here, so residents can drink their sweet, creamy lattes and work them off in the same spot. The Southwest Community Pool and the Gabriel Skate Park are east of the neighborhood.
The Washington Square and the Square Too are the home of the local Nordstrom, Sears, J.C. Penny’s and Macy’s stores to the south, and the Portland Golf Club, established in 1913 and redesigned in 1949, is a par-72, 6683 yard course with no water holes.
The Tri-Met company provides public transportation to the neighborhood on route number 1. The remainder of the grid aligned streets trail off in the thick green woods near the center of the Maplewood Neighborhood. There are no sidewalks, but bike lanes adorn the major roadways. Portland is famed for its bike-friendly street and has been named the second most bike-friendly city in the world after Amsterdam by a major vacation retailer.
