Overlook Neighborhood

The Overlook is an appealing neighborhood beside the Willamette River. An interesting mix of apartments, lofts, condominiums, and single-family houses, many homes sit on bluffs and have views across the river toward downtown Portland and the wooded hillsides beyond it. The Overlook also has a vital business district along Interstate Avenue and a low-lying industrial area around Swan Island, now connected to the Overlook with landfill.

The pastoral University of Portland campus sits just outside the northwestern border of the Overlook. The neighborhood border curves along Willamette Boulevard on the northwest and runs along North Ainsworth Street to Interstate 5, the east boundary. The south border is the long on-ramp to the Fremont Bridge, and the southwestern boundary is the Willamette River. The zip code for the Overlook is 97217.

A neighborhood in transition, the Overlook has not only shady streets of older single-family homes but also contrasting blocks of new condominiums and lofts. Next to rugged hillside Madrona Park is the ultra-modern Adidas headquarters, which employs many in the Portland area. Overlook Park has views of the river and of the rail yards.

The MAX light rail runs down Interstate Avenue for easy commuting from the neighborhood, but many residents choose to bicycle across the bridge to the downtown area or the Pearl District. Downtown is a five-minute drive.

Beach Elementary is the neighborhood public school. It has an involved parent group and a community garden. Children from Beach attend Ockley Green Middle School and Jefferson High School. Many parochial and independent schools also serve the area.

The Overlook is a popular neighborhood full of busy restaurants and nightspots. Bicyclists, strollers, and joggers crowd streets of interesting shops or well-kept homes and apartments with lush mature gardens. It’s a neighborhood worth getting to know.
