Corbett – Terwilliger – Lair Hill Neighborhood

The small neighborhoods of Corbett, Terwilliger, and Lair Hill (together with South Waterfront and Johns Landing) make up the community that is collectively known as South Portland. Running north and south in a long strip of land along the Willamette River, South Portland is bordered on the east side by Highway 43.

Lair Hill, in the northwest part of the neighborhood, was once an important historical Portland neighborhood where immigrants settled. Much of that history was removed in 1958, when the neighborhood underwent urban revitalization, although some ethnic shops and buildings remain. Corbett lies to the east of Lair Hill, and Terwilliger to the south of Corbett.

While the urban flight of the 1950s gave way to a decline in the community, the area’s affordability was seized on by students attending local universities, including Lewis and Clark College, the Oregon Health and Science University, and Portland State. These well-educated residents soon organized a neighborhood revolution. As a result, the first protected district in Portland history was born, the Lair Hill Historic Conservation District.

Today South Portland, including Corbett, Terwilliger, and Lair Hill, have a mix of residential housing, from historic Victorians to brand new riverfront condominiums, apartments, and town houses. The neighborhood is thriving, and it has an aerial tram that provides public transportation. There is a Children’s Museum, the Willamette River Greenway Trail, and countless parks with plenty of open space.

Among the neighborhood’s outstanding parks are Lair Hill Park with two historic buildings and an outdoor sculpture (where chess players like to congregate in the summer.) Along the Willamette River, residents can enjoy Willamette Park, with soccer fields and a dog park, and the smaller Butterfly Park, which maintains a natural habitat of riverfront vegetation that attracts the butterflies for which it was named.
