Portland at a Glance
Sunnyside Neighborhood
The Sunnyside neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, is famous for its integration of art, ecology, and urban life. Like Greenwich Village in New York, Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco, and Fremont in Seattle, Sunnyside is a longtime haven for local culture and creativity. Sunnyside is alternately referred to as “the Belmont district,” a name that sometimes encompasses other nearby neighborhoods.
Residents in Sunnyside maintain the Portland dedication to sustainability. Front yard gardens feature recycled items turned into functional things like planters, or works of art. Many people choose to walk and ride bikes exclusively in the Sunnyside neighborhood and metropolitan Portland. A vacation company recently named Portland the second most bike-friendly city in the world after Amsterdam.
Many buildings here date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, and retain Victorian architecture. Old buildings here are refurbished, and every effort is made to protect their design and originality. Laurelhurst Park is located a few blocks northeast of the Sunnyside neighborhood. This beautifully maintained recreation site has walking, running and biking trails. Some are paved while others are dirt paths leading through woods. The park has horseshoe pits, tennis and volleyball courts, soccer fields and basketball courts. It also has a duck pond and a designated dog area, where man’s best friend can run and play without a leash.
Sunnyside contains or is close to many of Portland’s unique retail experiences. It is not far from downtown and the infamous Powell’s City of Books, a bookstore that takes up an entire city block. Movie Madness, within Sunnyside, is a video store that aspires to do for DVDs what Powells does for books, with 60,000 titles.
Sunnyside is a special, inspiring place with peaceful neighbors and an artistic, creative culture.
