Garfield Neighborhood

Garfield is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The zip code for Garfield is 15224. The boundaries of the neighborhood are Mossfield Street to the west, Black Street on the north, North Negley Avenue on the east, and Penn Avenue on the south. Garfield is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Pittsburgh and was named after President James Garfield. It is located in the area of Pittsburgh known as the East End.

It is a nice mix of residential and commercial properties. East Pittsburgh is a hilly area, and this allows for great views in all directions. Garfield is a real neighborhood, where people actually know their neighbors’ names, and it is not uncommon to see them going for a walk and actually talking to other neighbors. The students at the local performing arts school have created murals on some of the buildings in the neighborhood. For those who love architecture, Garfield has an abundance of row homes known locally as the “Pittsburgh Boxes.”

Pittsburgh’s Fort Pitt Elementary School is an accelerated learning academy. It provides an education for the children of the Garfield neighborhood from Pre K to 5th grade. The school is in a partnership with America’s Choice School Design, which involves working with the individual students, and it also provides for extended school days and a longer school year. The Fort Pitt Playground includes a ball field, tennis and basketball courts and a playground. Rogers School for the Creative and Performing Arts is located in the Garfield neighborhood, as well.

Highland Park, the home of the Pittsburgh Zoo, is an easy drive away from the Garfield neighborhood.

There are local grocery stores and other businesses in the neighborhood, but for a larger grocery store, the Shop N Save in Upper Lawrenceville is one of the closest supermarkets to Garfield.
