Polish Hill Neighborhood

The Polish Hill neighborhood is the inspiration behind a published book generated by students called Polish Hill Remembered. Polish immigrants eager to work in the growing steel industry settled this community in the late 1800s. Nestled on a hill overlooking the scenic Allegheny River, the Polish Hills neighborhood is located in Allegheny County, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the zip code area of 15219. Liberty Avenue borders the Polish Hill neighborhood to the north, Bloomfield Bridge to the east, Bigelow Boulevard to the south and 28th Street Bridge to the west.

The Polish Hill neighborhood is pedestrian friendly with sidewalks and accessible to public transportation. Students in the community can attend Robert Lee Vann Elementary School, Woolslair Elementary School, Arsenal Middle School, and Schenley High School. Carnegie Mellon University is just ten minutes away and features notable alumni such as Ted Danson, actor and television producer.

Several golf courses and parks are in the vicinity of the Polish Hill neighborhood such as Bob O’Connor Golf Course, Grand View Golf Club, South Hills Country Club and Oakmont Country Club. Within walking distance of the Polish Hill community, West Penn Recreation Center offers weight rooms, a swimming pool, basketball courts, and West Penn Field, a skate park. Schenley Park is eleven minutes away and offers a disc golf course, played with Frisbees, and picnic areas.

Some of the descendants of the original Polish immigrants still reside in Polish Hill, though the community has become diversified over the years. Polish Hill is a unique and desirable neighborhood, with rich history and landmarks such as the Immaculate Heart of Mary, a large Renaissance-style historical church that is located in the heart of the Polish Hill neighborhood.
