West End Neighborhood
There is a bit of confusion when referring to Pittsburgh’s West End. Indeed, there appears to be a misconception that West End encompasses a whole region including the West End Valley along with several western neighborhoods, when in reality West End is simply one of Pittsburgh’s 90 distinct neighborhoods. To avoid confusion, this neighborhood has been recently renamed ”West End Village.” This neighborhood, located a little bit less than one mile from downtown Pittsburgh, encompasses a small valley just south of the Ohio River.
Originally named ”Temperanceville” the West End Village was founded in 1837. Today, West End Village boasts a business district with over 150 businesses, including antique stores, florists, home designers and home improvement stores. To improve and develop these businesses, in 2009, the Urban Redevelopment Authority, a municipal authority that purchases businesses in Pittsburgh, has added the West End Village as a Main street Pittsburgh district.
Parents of school-age children have several school choices directly within the area and in the neighboring communities. Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School just off Crucible Street, Schaeffer Elementary School off Clairhaven Street, Sloan Christian Academy off Wabash Street, and Langley High School off Sheraden Boulevard are just a few examples of close-by schools.
Overall, West End Village is not very walkable. A car will be needed to run most errands. The neighborhood is connected to the north side of Pittsburgh through the West End Bridge. For those looking for a place to jog and enjoy some fresh air, however, there are the advantages of a few parks nearby. West End Park, was recently voted one of Pittsburgh’s best-planned community parks.
West End Village is home to about 462 residents, which make up 0.1% of Pittsburgh’s total population.
