Duquesne Heights Neighborhood

Duquesne Heights is located south of downtown Pittsburgh’s golden triangle, on the western side of Mount Washington. With an active business district, many parks and recreational areas, and the historical Duquesne Incline railway, it is one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods.

Prior to 1851, this area was known as Coal Hill. The German settlers were determined to find a better way to get to the top of Coal Hill so they designed and built incline railroads to take people to the top of what is now known as Mount Washington. Duquesne Incline Railway is one of the two that remain. The upper station houses a museum of Pittsburgh history. The incline runs every morning, 365 days a year. The tickets for this popular ride are only $4.50 for a round trip ticket and children, senior citizens and students are all free. Free parking at the bottom of the railway is available in the west end section of Pittsburgh, across the street from Fort Pitt Bridge. This site is considered one of the world’s top ten in the world for viewing cityscape. There are several restaurants at the top, where incredible cuisine and views can be enjoyed at the same time.

Duquesne University, hugs a bluff overlooking the city. The campus is near the Heights and students enjoy walking to the community businesses. It was founded in 1878 by the Order of the Holy Spirit, and is the largest Catholic College in Pennsylvania.

Olympia Park, located in the neighborhood, has a lighted baseball field, playground, pavilion and recreation building. Point State Park is near the Golden Triangle and close to the base of the Incline railway. The 36-acre site is an historical park listed as a National Historic Landmark.
