Spring Garden Neighborhood

Spring Garden is a neighborhood on the north side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, about 10 minutes from the heart of the downtown area. This neighborhood is part of what is known as the city’s “Deutschtown” area, so named because it was originally settled by German immigrants in the 1800s. Spring Garden is in the 15212 zip code area, within Allegheny County.

The neighborhood of Spring Garden spans roughly .36 square miles and has nearly 1,275 residents. The bounds of this community are difficult to describe, but it extends roughly to Spring Garden Avenue on the north and Concord Street and Vinial Street on the south. Spring Garden Avenue spans the entire length of the neighborhood from north to south, and the community includes land on either side. Interstate 279 runs past the neighborhood on the west, and the river follows the length of the neighborhood on the east.

Much of the northern two-thirds of Spring Garden is heavily wooded or devoted to commercial areas, but the southernmost portion is residential, made up primarily of closely spaced single-family homes on shaded lots.

The residential areas of Spring Garden are within walking distance of Cowley – Goettman Park, which offers basketball courts, baseball/softball fields, and a community swimming pool. Schools within walking distance of the neighborhood include Spring Hill Elementary School on Damas Street, Spring Garden Elementary School on Spring Garden Avenue, and North Catholic High School on Troy Hill Road.

A variety of amenities can be found just on the other side of I-279, near the southern portion of the Spring Garden neighborhood. These include Allegheny General Hospital, Heinz Stadium (home of the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL team), PNC Park (home of the Pittsburgh Pirates MLB team), and the Allegheny Commons Park.
