Pittsburgh at a Glance
Squirrel Hill South Neighborhood
The north border of the Squirrel Hill South neighborhood is Forbes Avenue. The breadth spans from the outer edge from Schenley Park to the far edge of Frick Park. The Parkview Boulevard is the eastern boundary. Browns Hill Road is the south border; Schenley Park is the western boundary for the neighborhood.
The Squirrel Hill South Neighborhood is located in the 15217 zip-code area of Pittsburgh. Political history is a point of interest here, as Pittsburgh gave birth to the Republican National Party. It had a strong rule on city government. Democrats came into power shortly after the Civil War when allegations of wrong-doing surrounded their Republican counterparts. Pittsburgh also has the distinction of having had the youngest mayor to serve when Luke Ravenstahl took office in 2008.
To the north of the Squirrel Hill South Neighborhood is Chatham University, founded in 1869, by Reverend William Trimble Beatty. To the east is the largest Park in Pennsylvania, Frick Park, named for benefactor Henry Clay Frick. Across the Homestead Grays Bridge are shopping, dining and entertainment at the Waterfront Plaza. To the west is the Schenley Park Golf Course, a 4,620-yard, par-67 public course that opened in 1902.
The neighborhood, tucked between Schenley Park and Frick Park, has many attractive options for anyone looking to live in a tranquil environment for a short-term or long-term residence. In fact, many of this area’s apartment buildings are designed to look like historical relics, but rent more affordably than the former mansions.
The Squirrel Hill South Neighborhood streets have sidewalks that fade just a bit around Frick Park. To compensate for somewhat challenging biking conditions in the neighborhood and support local biking enthusiasts, the park lands throughout the region have dedicated biking and hiking trails. Public transportation is operated by the Port Authority.
