Terrace Village Neighborhood

Roughly two miles east of the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is the Terrace Village neighborhood. Along with the adjacent communities of Bedford Dwellings, Crawford-Roberts, Middle Hill, and Upper Hill, this community is part of what is known as Pittsburgh’s Hill District. It is bounded by Rose Street and Reed Street/Centre Avenue on the north and Allequippa Street on the east. On the west, it extends roughly to Devilliers Street/Bentley Drive and Lombard Street. Its southern boundary is created by Diaz Way, Bentley Drive, Whitridge Street, Wadsworth Street, and Allequippa Street.

Terrace Village encompasses the 15213 and 15219 zip code areas and is part of Allegheny County. It spans nearly a half square mile and is home to more than 2,700 residents.

Part of the University of Pittsburgh campus extends into the eastern portion of the neighborhood, and Carnegie Mellon University is located just east of that. Within walking distance west of the community, adjacent to the UPMC Mercy Hospital, is another of the city’s prominent educational offerings – Duquesne University.

Interestingly, the popular TV series Hill Street Blues is said to be based on this neighborhood, as one of the show’s writers attended nearby Carnegie Mellon University (back when it was known as Carnegie Institute of Technology).

Another popular attraction near Terrace Village is Schenley Park. In addition to a variety of trails, playing fields, and a sportsplex, this large regional park hosts a golf course and the Philipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. For outdoor recreation even closer to home, the Kennard Playground and Warren K. Branch Park can be found in the western portion of Terrace Village.
