West Oakland Neighborhood

West Oakland is a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The zip codes for West Oakland are 15213 and 15219. The boundaries of the neighborhood are 5th Avenue on the south, the University of Pittsburgh on the east, Burrows Street on the west and Eckstein Place and Wadsworth Street on the north. This is a neighborhood with a lot of diversity. Most of the homes are multi-family, townhouses, and apartments. West Oakland is conveniently located east of downtown and just a short drive from all the amenities. There is public transportation in this neighborhood.

Carlow University is located in West Oakland. It is the first Catholic all women’s university in Pennsylvania. It is a smaller university that offers an excellent teacher-to-student ratio and small classes. It was founded in the early 1920s by the Sisters of Mercy. Carlow University offers 50 undergraduate programs and eight graduate programs.

Kennard Playground is a recreational park that has it all; it has a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, baseball field, and softball diamond. It is slightly outside the neighborhood but an easy drive.

There are a lot of local ethnic markets in the areas near West Oakland but to find a larger chain supermarket requires a ride. There are a Traders Joes and a Whole Foods northeast of the neighborhood.

Schenley Park is 456 acres of woodlands and more located in the center of Oakland. It is an amazing park that offers the Phipps Conservatory with its many different environments, a skating rink, swimming pool, and a golf course. Schenley Park also offers a visitor’s center and a café.
