In 1723, German settlers moved into Berks County, Pennsylvania and settled in the area of Womelsdorf. One of the settlers, John Womelsdorf, laid out the town in 1762 and named it Middle Town. The name was changed in 1744 and incorporated in 1833. Today, this borough 50 miles east of Harrisburg is rich in history and tradition.
Another immigrant to the area, Conrad Weiser, served as an Indian interpreter and helped coordinate Pennsylvania’s Indian policy. Today, the Conrad Weiser Homestead is a State Historic Site. Three of the buildings are open to the public, and the 26 acres of land is a popular park with picnic areas, a pond, and a gazebo.
Womelsdorf was visited by George Washington in 1793. He stayed at the Stouch Tavern, which was built in the 1730s. The tavern is still in operation today.
Womelsdorf is conveniently located between I-78 and the Pennsylvania turnpike, giving those renting apartments here access to many metro areas.
