Charleston County, South Carolina

In 1629, the Province of Carolina was founded. Eight English noblemen ruled the province, but disagreements among the noblemen caused a division to develop between North and South. In 1729, North Carolina and South Carolina became royal colonies – two of the original 13 colonies.

With such a long and colorful history, it’s no wonder that Charleston, which started out as Charles Towne in 1670, is such a beautiful and historic city – a favorite among tourists. As the second largest city in South Carolina, Charleston serves as the county seat of Charleston County.

Located along the Atlantic coast, Charleston County has a lot to offer – miles of white sand beaches, quiet, secluded islands, hidden coves, beautiful cities, and amazing parks and historic districts.

Edisto Island is a popular vacation area with amazing beaches. Camping, fishing, swimming, and beachcombing are all popular pastimes. Edisto Island is home to Edisto Beach State Park, one of South Carolina’s four oceanfront state parks with campsites along the oceanfront or in the maritime forest, cabins, hiking and biking trails, a boat ramp and dock, and picnic areas.

The city of Folly Beach is located on historic Folly Island. It is a hugely popular area for tourists, who come to enjoy the beautiful beaches, the marinas, the fishing piers, the beachfront parks, the events, and the three water parks.

Other communities in Charleston County include the cities of North Charleston and the Isle of Palms and the towns of Lincolnville, James Island, Kiawah Island, Mount Pleasant, Seabrook Island, Sullivan’s Island, and Rockville.
