Avondale Neighborhood

Avondale has been a hotbed of renovation in recent years. With its charming bungalow-styled homes and an Ashley River District address, this is a very desirable community within Charleston. Considered part of the larger West Ashley neighborhood, Avondale is usually defined as the area between Saint Andrews Boulevard and Savannah Highway.

With many single-family brick homes, Avondale residents not only enjoy close access to the “Designer District,” but frequently select this neighborhood for its outgoing lifestyle features. Perfect for young families and students attending the Medical University of South Carolina, (one of the earliest private colleges founded for physicians in the U.S.,) and the College of Charleston, Avondale is a diverse neighborhood that offers something for everyone.

Avondale residents live in close proximity to downtown Charleston and have the advantage of easy access to the West Ashley Greenway. This trail is great for those who love hiking and biking. The greenway runs from the residential neighborhoods of West Ashley, (including Avondale) to more rural areas dotted with wetlands. Ten miles in length and relatively flat, this great resource is perfect for a family day out or for regular exercise.

Other great amenities of Avondale include its close proximity to downtown Charleston’s shopping and dining, easy entry to Interstates 26 and 526, and ready access to nearby beaches and water sports.

The Avondale neighborhood is located just across the river from the prestigious military academy, The Citadel, and just south of Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, with 80 acres of gardens, moss-laden oak trees, and a zoo that children will adore and wish to visit often. Also found there are a replica of a 17th century trading ship, fortifications, and the ruins of early American settlements.
