Heathwood/Old Towne Neighborhood

The Heathwood/Old Towne neighborhood is located in West Ashley, the part that is known as “West Ashley inside Mark Clark.” It is just a short distance from the very important historic site, Charles Towne Landing. The eastern boundary for this community is Old Towne Road; Ashley River Road lies at the southern edge and Ashley Hall Road represents the western border. The northern part of the neighborhood lies along Wendy Lane and Marvin Avenue.

Homes in this neighborhood are either designated as being in Heathwood or being in Old Towne Acres or Old Towne Villas. The distinction is quite simple: Old Towne Villas are single-family attached townhouses, whereas the vast majority of homes in both Old Towne Acres and Heathwood are single-story dwellings.

Houses in these two areas are older, with many being built as far back as 1958. The most recent of these residences was built around 1976. Size varies greatly with the single-family detached homes in Old Towne Acres being as small as 1,000 square feet, but barely exceeding 1,800 square feet.

Homes in Heathwood tend to be considerably larger, ranging from slightly over 1,250 square feet to 2,170 square feet. The predominant architectural style for homes in both of these neighborhoods is the ranch.

History buffs will delight in stepping back in time when heading to Charles Towne Landing. It is the site on which the English settlers landed in 1670. It subsequently became known as the birthplace of Carolinas colony, and the place where the plantation system of the American south was established.

Among the most interesting things to do at Charles Towne Landing is to visit the interactive museum in the Visitors Center. From there visitors can pick up an MP3 player to listen to as they take the self-guided history tour of the trails.
