Whaley Street Neighborhood

Whaley Street is located in the southwest section of Columbia, in ZIP code 29201. The neighborhood is bounded by Catawba Street to the north, Heyward Street to the south, Assembly Street to the east, and Wayne Street and Pacific Park to the west.

This neighborhood lies just south of the Greek Village of the University of South Carolina. The Greek Village consists of 20 houses, each of which can accommodate 30 to 40 resident students. The Greek Village deliberately mimics the horseshoe pattern that was used in the design of the main part of the university.

Because this area is so close to the university, it is an ideal location for students to live in. Property in this neighborhood is an eclectic mix of high end apartments, large historic homes, and more recently constructed homes. Some of the historic homes have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Most of the single family homes are two stories. They range in size from 1800 square feet to just over 3600 square feet. The oldest homes in the historic Elmwood Park area were built around 1907. The older homes have been modernized, although they retain their Old South character with stately porches and elegant landscaping.

Pacific Park is a lovely little neighborhood park with a neighborhood center, a ball field, an outdoor basketball court, a playground and a spray pool for those hot Carolina summers.
