Greenville County, South Carolina

Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville County, in the northwestern corner of South Carolina, is a beautiful spectacle of soaring mountains, cascading waterfalls, lush forests, and crystal blue lakes. Weaving through the beautiful landscape is a smattering of small towns, hillside villages, and the bustling city of Greenville, the county seat.

The county was founded in 1786 and contains nearly 70 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Campbell’s Covered Bridge is one such site. It is located in Gowensville, a small town in the northeastern section of the county. The wooded covered bridge is the last remaining covered bridge in the state. Poinsett Bridge, another historic bridge built in 1820, is a stone bridge located in the Poinsett Bridge Heritage Preserve, a 120-acre park.

The city of Greenville is the second largest city in the state. Located halfway between Atlanta, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina, the area has thrived due to its ideal location. Founded in 1831, Greenville has grown into a metropolitan hub and is the largest city in South Carolina’s Upstate region. Greenville is home to several colleges and universities, including Furman University and Bob Jones University.

Perhaps inspired by the natural beauty surrounding it, Greenville has a thriving arts community. Venues include the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, the Bi-Lo Center, and the Pendleton Street Arts District, located near the downtown area. Greenville is also home to several arts festivals and other events. The Greenville County Museum of Art and the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery feature paintings and other works of art. Greenville’s music scene is punctuated with jazz, rock, and country.

Greenville County contains several parks, including water parks such as the 7th Inning Splash Water Park and Otter Creek Park. Pelham Mill Park is a historic park containing the first textile mill in Greenville County as well as trails, picnic areas, and a dog park. The 240-acre Pleasant Ridge Park includes a campground, a walking trail, a fishing lake, cabins, and a playground.

Greenville County includes the cities of Simpsonville, Mauldin, and Travelers Rest and parts of the cities Fountain Inn and Greer. Other communities include Five Forks, Berea, Gantt, Judson, Taylors, Tigerville, Ware Place, and Parker.
