Richland County, South Carolina

South Carolina is a beautiful state that encompasses mountains in its northwestern region to amazing beaches and barrier islands in its southeastern region. Right in the heart of the state, in the Sandhill region, is Richland County. From historic locations such as Woodrow Wilson’s home to beautiful locations such as the waterfalls in Finlay Park, Richland County is as diverse as the state itself.

Columbia is the county seat, the state capital, and the largest city in South Carolina. The Saluda and Broad Rivers merge in Columbia, forming the Congaree River. The Congaree National Park includes 22,200 acres of forest along the river. This park is popular for canoeing, kayaking, hiking, backcountry camping, and primitive camping.

Columbia is home to Fort Jackson, the University of South Carolina, the South Carolina State Museum, Benedict College, Columbia College, and Allen University.

The Congaree Vista is a historic section located near the river. It is a collection of exclusive shops and restaurants housed in historic buildings and warehouses. At the center of Congaree Vista is the city’s old train station, now a seafood restaurant. The Adluh Flour Mill is an iconic building that opened in 1900. The mill is still in operation and features flour, baking mixes, cornmeal, and stone-ground grits.

Five Points in another Columbia hotspot, filled with restaurants, shops, nightlife, art galleries, and events such as an annual chili cook-off, a “festivus” celebration featuring a bar tour, and one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the region.

Sesquicentennial State Park wraps around a 30-acre lake and includes over 1,400 acres. It offers a two-acre fenced dog park, a campground, hiking trails, a challenge course, picnic areas, geocaching, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.

Richland County contains several other cities, towns, and communities. These include Forest Acres, Irmo, Arcadia Lakes, Blythewood, Cayce, Eastover, Ballentine, Eau Claire, Lake Murray, and Gadsden.
