Walterboro, SC Houses for Rent
Walterboro is a small city roughly an hour west of Charleston and about an hour north of Savannah, Georgia. It is located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, about 40 miles from the coast. Walterboro, the county seat of Colleton County, is a charming, southern city with plenty to offer. Find your Walterboro apartment and enjoy a short drive to beaches, including Edisto Beach State Park, and two of the most beautiful cities in the south: Charleston and Savannah.
Founded in 1783, Walterboro served as a summer retreat for local plantation owners. The two earliest settlers were brothers by the names of Jacob and Paul Walter. These two plantation owners moved to the area from Jacksonboro after Paul’s daughter contracted malaria and they decided to settle somewhere healthier. The marshy areas of the Lowcountry were ideal for rice plantations, but malaria was rampant. The town was eventually named for the two brothers.
Walterboro is a great place for your next apartment. This dynamic city features beautiful shopping plazas, antique shops, historic sites, restaurants, the Colleton County Museum and Farmer’s Market, and the South Carolina Artisans Center, South Carolina’s Official Folk Art and Craft Center.
The Great Swamp Sanctuary covers 800 acres and features boardwalks, hiking and biking trails, canoe trails, a butterfly garden, a duck pond, and a beaver pond. In addition to wildlife viewing, visitors to the sanctuary can walk the same paths Colonial-era travelers passed – the Charleston-to-Savannah Stagecoach Road still contains remnants of fallen bridges.
Edisto Beach State Park is less than an hour from Walterboro. This great park is one of South Carolina’s four oceanfront state parks. In addition to its beautiful beach, this park features hiking and biking trails, campgrounds, cabins, a playground, a park store, and a beautiful maritime forest. Visitors to the park enjoy boating, fishing, swimming, beachcombing, and sunbathing.
The Walterboro Historic District and Hickory Valley are both located on the National Register of Historic Places. The Walterboro Historic District is in the pedestrian-friendly downtown area and features historic businesses and homes dating to the early 1800s. Hickory Valley is a neighborhood within Walterboro that features Victorian homes built between 1814 and 1929.
When you’ve chosen a Walterboro apartment to rent and you’ve settled in to your new place, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the festivals and events that take place in this picturesque town. The Rice Festival celebrates the town’s history with the crop, a staple until the Civil War. The festival includes a pageant, a cooking contest, and a parade. Other events include the Holiday House and Craft Fair, Wings and Wheels (a festival celebrating antique airplanes and automobiles), and the annual Walterboro Antiques, History, and Arts Festival.
