Plymouth County, Massachusetts

In the early 1600s, a group of brave men and women boarded the Mayflower and set sail for a place few people had ever seen. The journey was a risky one and fraught with all kinds of hurdles as they attempted to start a new life in a strange New World. The colony they established in 1620 was called Plymouth.

With its 300-plus year history, Plymouth is one of the oldest towns in the country, and it is one of the county seats of Plymouth County. If you’ve decided to rent an apartment in Plymouth County, get ready to surround yourself with amazing history.

In 1858, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the poem “The Courtship of Miles Standish” based loosely on his ancestors, John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, who were original Plymouth colonists. The poem has become part of American folklore and the John and Priscilla Alden Family Sites are National Historic Landmarks. The house was built sometime between 1650 and 1700 and is a historic house museum. The original homestead site is an important archeological site that dates to about 1630.

Other historic locations include Bradford House, dating to 1714; Cushing Homestead, built in 1678; the Bryant-Cushing House, built in 1698; Plymouth Rock, the disembarkation site of William Bradford and the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620; and the Plymouth Lighthouse, first built in 1768.

But even with a history older than the US itself, Plymouth County is a forward-thinking, fast-paced area. Plymouth is one of the fastest-growing towns in Massachusetts and is an important economic and tourism hub of the South Shore. Tourists enjoy such sites as the Plimoth Plantation, a living history museum, and a full-size replica of the Mayflower. Pilgrim Hall Museum is the oldest public museum in the nation and was founded in 1824. The Richard Sparrow House is the oldest house in Plymouth, built in 1640.

Parks include Ellisville Harbor State Park, with a beach area inside Cape Cod Bay. Myles Standish State Forest is home to 16 lakes and ponds and is popular for hiking, swimming, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.

The other county seat in Plymouth County is Brockton. One of the largest cities in Massachusetts, it is home of legendary boxers Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler. Brockton has been named one of the best communities for young people, making it a great location for families.

Other communities in Plymouth County include Carver, Halifax, Lakeville, Hull, Abington, West Bridgewater, East Bridgewater, Duxbury, Rochester, Hanover, Hanson, Kingston, Marion, and Middleborough.
