Gloucester County, New Jersey

Gloucester County, New Jersey is part of the Delaware Valley area, with low-lying rivers and coastal plains. The highest elevation is a slight rise along County Route 654; the lowest point is sea level at the Delaware River. Gloucester County is located south of Philadelphia and northwest of Atlantic City. Its county seat is Woodbury.

Founded in 1686, the county incorporates agricultural, industrial and residential areas. It’s one of the chief food-producing areas of New Jersey and the US; farming is highly-developed and includes the production of fruit, vegetables and dairy products as well as the breeding of livestock.

There are a number of industries here too, with large and small modern plants that employ thousands of residents. The combination of agriculture and industry, coupled with the area’s location, makes for thriving residential communities.

The county’s population is approximately 290,000. Men who are searching for wives might consider relocating; for every 100 females age 18 and over, there are only 90 males. The median income for a household in Gloucester County is $54,273.

Amid the woods, lakes and streams history comes alive here in distinctive and outstanding early-American architecture, including homes of notable patriots scattered throughout the county.

Historical sites include Adams Meeting House, circa 1793, the oldest Methodist Church building in Gloucester County. Candor Hall or Ladd’s Castle is the oldest brick house in the county, built circa 1688 by John Ladd, who is said to have helped William Penn lay out the streets of Philadelphia.

The Clement Oak is one of the largest oak trees in the eastern US, measuring 18 feet high with a spread of over 100 feet. This oak was mentioned in a survey as early as 1678, so even 297 years ago the tree must have been a landmark in the area.

There are four county parks in Gloucester as well as the county-run Pitman Golf Course, a regulation 18-hole golf course with putting green, driving range and full-service clubhouse with restaurant and bar. The golf course has attracted players ever since 1927, has earned 3.5 stars from Golf Digest and voted “Best of Gloucester County” by South Jersey magazine’s “Top Public Golf Courses.”

Notable residents include Tara Lipinski, Olympic figure skating gold medal winner and Patti Smith, punk rock musician.
