Washington County, Oregon

The Portland metro area consists of five counties. Washington County is one of the more populated counties, with the largest city being its county seat of Hillsboro. This beautiful county of rolling, green hills, dramatic mountains, forests, and the meandering Tualatin River was created in 1843. With its diverse economy that ranges from gorgeous sprawling wineries to high-tech companies, Washington County’s opportunities include manufacturing and agriculture to Fortune 500 companies such as Nike, and technology-based companies such as Tektronix and Intel. Washington County has so many high-tech companies that the area is often referred to as the Silicon Forest. Reser’s Fine Foods and Columbia Sportswear are also headquartered in Washington County.

Located west of Portland, Hillsboro is one of the largest cities in Oregon. Settled in the 1840s and incorporated in 1876, Hillsboro has a large number of historic sites. These include the Rice-Gates House, Imbrie Farm, the Old Washington County Jail, and Manning-Kamna Farm. The city includes a downtown with several historic buildings, theaters, restaurants, golf courses, and over 20 parks.

The oldest city in Washington County is Forest Grove, which was settled in the 1840s and was incorporated in 1872. Included in its list of historic sites is Old College Hall, a building on the campus of Pacific University. The university was established in 1849 and is a private liberal arts school.

Other communities in Washington County include Gaston, Durham, Cornelius, Banks, Beaverton, King City, Sherwood, and a small portion of Portland.
