Downtown Amarillo, Texas, also known as Center City, has been going through a revitalization process since the 1990s. This urban center has invested a great deal of resources in architecture, public art, business, and entertainment venues. Though it is relatively small, it has several major attractions.

Streets running east to west in the 79101 zip code are named after former presidents of the United States, while north-to-south thoroughfares are numbered avenues. The western border of downtown is S. Van Buren Street, which intersects with 12th Avenue to make up its southern border. The northern boundary follows railroad tracks laid just to the north of First Avenue, and the eastern boundary follows the tracks along S. Grant Street.

Visitors can find the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce in the southwestern corner of downtown, on W. 10 Avenue and S. Polk Street. To the northwest are the headquarters of the “Amarillo Globe-News,” the city’s source for daily happenings. Also within the downtown area are the headquarters of local NBC affiliate KAMR and radio station KQIZ.

Popular restaurants line S. Polk Street. They include Ohms Cafe and Bar, which offers upscale dining. Down the street, Acapulco Mexican Bar and Restaurant offers more casual fare. To the west of those restaurants, diners can enjoy the Amarillo Club’s members-only atmosphere with fine dining and exclusive entertainment options that include orchestral performances.

The Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum is located in the eastern part of downtown. It is home to several local sports teams, including the Amarillo Bulls, a North American Hockey League team. The civic center also hosts minor-league football, major events like circuses and rodeos, and meetings, conventions, and corporate parties.
