Hyde Park Neighborhood

Known as Austin’s first suburb, Hyde Park dates back to 1891, when it was created as a streetcar suburb. Today, it is one of the most populated neighborhoods in Austin. Hyde Park contains two historic districts. Hyde Park Historic District is located north of West 40th Street and south of West 45th Street. It contains a variety of architecture, including Queen Anne Victorian, Tudor Revival, and Craftsman.

The Shadow Lawn Historic District dates back to 1917. It contains beautiful Revival styles of architecture popular around that time. Prominent architects include Joseph W. Northrop, Jr., who also designed buildings at Rice University, and William Ward Watkin, who also designed buildings for the university and was also the head of the school of architecture.

Hyde Park is an excellent neighborhood for your Austin apartment. Since it began as a suburb, this neighborhood is fairly self-contained. It is home to several historic buildings, including the Elisabet Ney Museum, Blue Bonnet Court, the Oliphant-Walker House, and the Page-Gilbert House. Shipe Park is located here and features basketball courts, picnic tables, a swimming pool, a playground, and tennis courts.
