North Loop Neighborhood
North Loop is a quirky neighborhood that does its part to “Keep Austin Weird,” as the local saying goes. Home to local and alternative Austin businesses, this area has a variety of residential styles and apartment complexes.
This neighborhood is north of the upscale Hyde Park community. North Loop is bordered by the area surrounding 51st Street to the south and the Highland area surrounding Airport Boulevard to the north. Interstate Highway 35 is to the east of North Loop and North Lamar Boulevard marks is western boundary. Its namesake street, North Loop Boulevard, is also known as 53rd Street and bisects the neighborhood.
North Loop Boulevard is also home to the major commercial developments in the area. Epoch Coffee serves coffee and bistro dishes. Monkeywrench Books is the local community bookstore cooperative. Other commercial areas reside along North Lamar Boulevard and include restaurants, food stands, grocery stores, clothing and local retail stores.
Residential development in this area is comprised of densly-packed, single-family houses, some of which have garage apartments or have been converted to duplexes. The City of Austin added dedicated bike lanes and bike share lanes along main roads including 51st Street and Airport Boulevard making this area extremely friendly for cyclists. Pedestrians can also enjoy paved sidewalks.
Though there are no official parks in the North Loop area, there is a field near Epoch Coffee and the University of Texas Intramural Fields at the western edge of 51st Street. This space has tennis courts, football fields, soccer, baseball and softball fields as well as plenty of room to spectate, walk or jog.
