Central Austin Neighborhood

Central Austin is situated around the University of Texas, a major draw to Austin that is home to several types of housing, restaurant and entertainment options. Geared toward students and young professionals, this area is extremely pedestrian friendly and is always bustling with activity.

Central Austin is bounded by several streets and can generally be viewed as the residential and commercial areas surrounding the University of Texas campus from North Lamar Boulevard to Interstate Highway 35. Its eastern part extends from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to 45th Street along Red River.

The Central Austin area has the most variety in its development, with university buildings and residential neighborhoods that have single-family houses and clusters of apartment complexes. As well as residences, commercial establishments, both local and national, line major streets and are often housed on lower stories of student residential complexes.

The University of Texas campus is almost entirely pedestrian-only, but allows cyclists to use through streets and sidewalks. In addition to Capital Metro bus routes, the university has campus-specific routes, going to and from stops on campus to locations around Austin that have high numbers of students. Routes include the Riverside area, with several student-housing options, the Intramural Fields and graduate student housing located near Mo-Pac and 5th Street downtown.

Guadalupe Street, known to locals as “The Drag,” serves as the campus boundary and bisects the Central Austin area. This street is the heart of the neighborhood and features hip restaurants like Mellow Mushroom and Madam Mam’s Thai Noodle House, boutique stores like Cream Vintage and even local bars like Hole in the Wall.
