Greater South River City Neighborhood

Greater South River City is a neighborhood in Austin. It is located along Oltorf Street and Congress Avenue to the west of Interstate 35. Most of the homes in South River City are older residences in a variety of different building styles.

One of the biggest destinations in the South River City area is located to the south, off St. Edwards Drive, the home of St. Edwards University. This university provides education to residents throughout Austin and the surrounding area. The school offers many degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. It also has a sports program that is popular with many in the Greater South River City neighborhood.

Many residents travel about a mile to the west of South River City for recreation. The South Austin Park and Recreation Center provides excellent opportunities to get some exercise in a well-maintained park setting. The park features 13 tennis courts as well as several multiple-use fields, mostly utilized for soccer. The tennis courts are used heavily for league play, individual skill training and lessons, and tournaments. The soccer fields are often used for youth league play. The park also has a large playground used by the youngest visitors.

Other area parks include Little Stacy Park, Blunn Creek Green Belt, and Big Stacy Park. Several of the city’s larger parks surround the neighborhood. Barton Creek Wilderness Park, Zilker Park, Lakeshore Park, Roy G. Guerrero Park, and the Riverside Golf Course are within five miles. South River City residents enjoy no shortage of opportunities for outdoor recreation.

For entertainment and culture, the Long Center for the Performing Arts is located off Riverside Drive to the north, within two miles of South River City. This performing arts center provides excellent theatrical performances throughout the year as well as many other performances. The area is also home to the Austin Lyric Opera and the Palmer Events Center.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is a few miles away, making this an ideal area for frequent travelers. You’ll find a variety of housing options scattered throughout the neighborhood, ranging from small, single-family homes on ample lots to terrific apartment buildings. Many of the homes were built prior to 1940, making this area historically significant as well as convenient.

Just on the other side of the river, to the north of the South River City neighborhood, is downtown Austin. This area offers a variety of options for unique shopping, entertainment, dining, and culture, including the Texas State Capitol and the Governor’s Mansion. Just north of the downtown area is the University of Texas-Austin campus.
