East Dallas Neighborhood

East Dallas comprises the oldest historic neighborhoods in the city. Its boundaries are Central Expressway, Mockingbird Lane, Loop 12, and Fair Park. Some parts of East Dallas are served by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

The architecture of each neighborhood reflects the period in which it was built. Belmont, for instance, consists of Craftsman bungalows, Tudor and Prairie homes built in the 1910s and 1920s. Greenland Hills, also known as the M Streets, and Hollywood/ Santa Monica are two of the conservation districts of Dallas.

The lovingly preserved Mediterranean, Craftsman, Spanish, Georgian, Prairie, Neoclassical, Italian Renaissance, Tudor and Colonial Revival homes earned the Swiss Avenue district a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Deep Ellum is famous for its jazz and blues clubs.

East Dallas offers great choices for those interested in the arts. The Latino Cultural Center (2600 Live Oak Street) is devoted to the conservation, development and support of Latino and Hispanic arts and culture. The Bath House Cultural Center (521 E. Lawther Drive) organizes many exhibits, performances, concerts and lectures every year.

East Dallas is a great choice for those people looking to commune with nature. White Rock Lake -a 1,254 acre reservoir- is an ideal place for walking, jogging, picnicking and sailing. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden (8525 Garland Road) is located on the southeastern shore of White Rock Lake and offers fantastic gardens and fountains, as well as impressive views of the lake and the Dallas skyline.

East Dallas is served by the Dallas Independent School District and has numerous public elementary, middle and high schools, as well as private Catholic schools. The Baylor College of Dentistry provides higher education.

The Baylor Medical Center (3500 Gaston Avenue) is a major patient care, teaching and research center for the Southwest.
