M Streets Neighborhood

The M Streets community of Dallas is arguably the most popular and most prestigious neighborhood in the city. Other neighborhoods may have older or more expensive homes, but the M Streets has a certain mystique, because of its prime location and because residents are committed to keeping the neighborhood in pristine condition.

The streets included in the community are McCommas, Morningside, Mercedes, Merrimac, and Monticello. Additional neighborhood streets, by virtue of being built at the same time and sharing many of the same characteristics, are also included in the M Streets neighborhood. The M Streets are bordered on the west by Central Expressway. Greenville Avenue on the east makes up the borders of the original neighborhood, known as Greenland Hills, but the M Streets do continue east to Skillman, and many homeowners there include themselves under the “M Streets” banner.

M Street homes, some that date back to around 1900, share a handful of architectural styles, including Tudor, Craftsman bungalows, and Prairie-style. Homes are kept in their original condition. A number of early-twentieth century mansions are also located here, which were homes to old Dallas’ elite. Downtown Dallas is a short drive away from the area.

Located on the southeastern side of the neighborhood is the Lower Greenville Avenue entertainment district, with restaurants and bars, as well as the Granada Theater. The Upper Greenville corridor, which is north of the intersection with Mockingbird Lane, is more retail oriented, but also includes restaurants.

Mockingbird Lane, which runs east/west a few blocks north of the M Streets, offers a number of shopping options. Mockingbird Station, at Central Expressway and Mockingbird, is a short distance away and is home to upscale shopping and dining. White Rock Lake is located a mile east of the area.

Southern Methodist University and the George W. Bush Presidential Library are located on the northwest side of Central Expressway and Mockingbird. The neighborhood falls under the Woodrow Wilson High School feeder district.
