Cielo Vista North Neighborhood

Cielo Vista North means “north sky view” in English. Considering that this neighborhood is on the southern border of the El Paso International Airport it seems an appropriate name. On the south-western end of the neighborhood is Ponder Park, a collection of baseball and softball diamonds, shaded picnic tables, and open play areas. Dogs are welcome, but must be leashed.

Cielo Vista North is one of the older El Paso neighborhoods with most homes built between 1940 and 1969. Later developments added a large number of apartment complexes to the neighborhood, making it one of the most densely populated area outside of the El Paso city center. All of this is tempered by tree lined streets with names like Honeysuckle Drive and Sunglow Way.

One of El Paso’s largest high schools, Burgess High takes up a two block stretch of Edgemere Boulevard. Bonham Elementary is on Catalina Way to the north and MacArthur Intermediate is on Whitus Drive, two blocks south of the high school. Churches in Cielo Vista North include St Paul’s United Methodist on Edgemere Boulevard, Immanuel Baptist on Hawkins Boulevard, and the Church at El Paso off of Montana Avenue.

The neighborhood has its own Cielo Vista Mall on Hawkins Boulevard at Gateway Boulevard West. Macy’s, Sears and JC Penney are all represented, along with a number of specialty shops. Restaurants with wait service include Hooters, Olive Garden, and Red Lobster. A food court offers a rather eclectic collection of eateries, including Chopsticks, Orange Julius, McDonald’s, and Subway. The mall is a transfer station for the El Paso County Transit system.
