Kern Place Neighborhood

Kern Place is a neighborhood of interesting history, located in El Paso. The boundaries of this neighborhood are formed by North Mesa Street, Mesita Drive, Piedmont Drive, and East Robinson Avenue. Kern Place’s neighbor to the southwest is The University of Texas at El Paso, and to the southeast, Arroyo Park.

Kern Place was created by successful local businessman Pete Kern, with construction beginning in 1914. Prior to this, hardship had led to him losing his business, his family, and the life he knew. After then spending a number of years in Alaska and regaining success, he returned to El Paso to find that he still had his land. Though this was not the end to his hardships, it was the beginning of Kern Place.

Today, Kern Place offers a broad spectrum in choices. The area of Cincinnati Avenue and North Mesa Street is a popular spot for nightlife. Nearby, at North Stanton Street and East Robinson Avenue, is El Paso’s first wine boutique and wine bar, Star Canyon Winery, which offers varietals of its own making. Plenty of food to suit nearly any palate is also available in this sector of town.

Farther into Kern Place is Madeline Park, a large park named after Pete Kern‘s daughter. This is a popular place for local gatherings, family picnics and playtime, and sports. A gazebo in the center of the park serves as a venue for outdoor concerts and other events. Alethia Park is also in Kern Place, near its northern border.

Housing in Kern Place is highly sought after, due to the neighborhood’s prestigious reputation. Styles in housing range from executive mansion to studio apartment.
