Lake Ray Hubbard is less than five miles northwest of Forney. This vast reservoir covers 22,745 acres and has a maximum depth of 40 feet. The lake contains largemouth bass, blue catfish, white crappie, and hybrid striped bass.
Forney’s community park and sports complex is situated on 127 acres. Opened in 2009, this large park includes ball fields, basketball courts, hiking and biking paths, tennis courts, and a splash pad water park.
With a history dating back to the 1840s, Forney’s past as a frontier town is still evident in its historical architecture. The area was first called Lone Elm, but eventually the name was changed to Brooklyn. It remained a small village until the Pacific Railroad came through, which caused the village to grow rapidly. John Wein Forney, the director of the Texas and Pacific Railroad Company, was credited for bringing the railroad into Brooklyn, and the town was renamed in his honor.
