Historic Southside Neighborhood

Walking down a street in the Historic Southside is a bit like stepping into a time tunnel. Elegant homes, many of the Georgian and Victorian era, stand on lots with manicured gardens and mature trees. Established in 1883, most of the homes in the neighborhood were built before and during the 1920s. This was the “Golden Age,” also known as the Roaring Twenties. Flapper dresses were raising eyebrows and Art Deco was finding its way into home decor.

After World War II, Fort Worth started to spread out. People were moving into suburbs and out of the inner city. Historic Southside was neglected until the mid 1970s when residents decided to give the area a much needed facelift. Today Historic Southside is home to both renters and homeowners.

Its southern end along Magnolia Avenue is known as Restaurant Row for the number of eateries along its length. Van Zandt-Guinn Park is on the western end of the neighborhood offering picnic tables, a large playground and plenty of open green space. An elementary school of the same name is right across the street. Other nearby schools include the private Ekklesia Christian School and the Holy Name School, part of the Our Mother Mercy Catholic Church.

The People Food Store is right in the neighborhood, looking much like the old time corner market. Most shops and businesses are along East Vickery Boulevard in the north or south towards Fort Worth’s main downtown. The Sycamore Golf Course and Park are to the east. Harmon Field Park with its hiking trails and soccer fields is to the north on the other side of Interstate 30.
