Travel to the southernmost tip of Texas and you’ll discover Hidalgo County. With plenty of open space, this area contains many ranches and farmland. The county was founded in 1852 and because of the rich soil of the Rio Grande Delta, farms and cattle ranches began to dot the area. Hidalgo County has a colorful history, with gold-seekers using the area as a stopping point during the California Gold Rush, Mexican bandits, cattle rustlers, political skirmishes, and outlaws from both sides of the river hiding out here. The county has settled down from its rough-and-tumble beginnings, and today the past is celebrated through historic sites and museums.
Hidalgo County is located just across the Rio Grande from the Tamaulipas, Mexico city of Reynosa. The county seat is Edinburg, a city that contains the only fully-accredited four-year university in the Rio Grande Valley, the University of Texas-Pan American. The Museum of South Texas History is also located in Edinburg. Other cities include McAllen, Mission, Pharr, San Juan, La Joya, Weslaco, and Alamo.
There are two major national parks in Hidalgo County. The Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge contains over 2,000 acres along the Rio Grande. It is home to several unusual species of birds, butterflies, mammals, and plants. Part of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge is also contained in Hidalgo County.
Events in the county include the Citrus Fiesta, a two-week festival held in Mission, the Rio Grande Valley Stock Show, and the Weslaco Sugar Festival. Historic sites include La Lomita Mssion and the Virgen de San Juan del Valle Shrine.
