Acres Home Neighborhood

During WWI, an area 10 miles northwest of Houston, Texas began to develop. One-acre lots were sold as small “farms” for those wanting to raise small livestock, such as chickens and pigs. The area became known as Acres Home. Today, Acres Home is an area still heavily wooded, a combination of both urban and rural lifestyles.

Predominately African-American, Acres Home has a strong sense of community. Nearby parks include Sylvester Turner Park, with a play area, ball fields, and a walking track on 22 acres. Highland Park is five acres and contains a playground, tennis court, ball field, and a basketball court. Winzer Park is 12 acres with a play area, ball field, tennis court, and basketball court. Lincoln City Park has a recreation center with a pool, weight room, and gym.
