Greater Eastwood Neighborhood

Greater Eastwood is one of the first planned districts in early Houston’s history. An official historic district established in 1913, this area neighbors downtown Houston on its east side. Close to downtown, attractions like Minute Maid Park and several nightclubs and bars, Greater Eastwood is an urban environment, with access to all of Houston’s biggest highlights.

Greater Eastwood is surrounded by commercial establishments. Harris Boulevard is lined with car maintenance shops and rental lots. Shops like Family Dollar, grocery stores, financial establishments, and realty offices line Telephone Road. Local restaurants include Bohemeo’s and Rustin’s Lounge, favorites of locals and tourists.

Milby Street acts as the western border for the Greater Eastwood area. It connects to the southern boundary, marked by Interstate Highway 45, also known as Gulf Freeway. To the east, the neighborhood ends at a length of railroad tracks running parallel to nearby Hughes Street. Harris Boulevard to the north completes the Greater Eastwood neighborhood boundaries.

Eastwood Park sits to the north of the Greater Eastwood neighborhood and offers a baseball field, as well as access to Eastwood pool and Eastwood Community Center, home to rental facilities and summer programming for kids. To the west, Settegast Park has a tennis court, baseball field, and covered pavilion, as well as its own community center.

Schools in the Greater Eastwood area include Cage Elementary School, Stonewall Jackson Senior High School, and Austin High School, all part of the Houston Independent School District. Private school alternatives in the area include KIPP Intrepid Preparatory School and Eastwood Academy. The neighborhood is also to the north of The University of Houston, which offers undergraduate curriculum and is home to a premier Texas law school.
