When Houston, Texas was founded in 1836, it was divided into four wards. In 1866, the Greater Fifth Ward was added. Today this historic district is undergoing a period of growth, redevelopment, and gentrification. The Greater Fifth Ward contains large African-American and Hispanic populations. Frenchtown, a community within the Greater Fifth Ward, was settled in 1922 by Louisiana Creoles.

It also contains a community center with a weight room and gymnasium. Located in the northeast section of Houston east of Eastex Freeway between Collingsworth Street and Clinton Drive, the Greater Fifth Ward has been home to many music, art, and political figures, including the Fifth Ward Boyz and the Geto Boys hip hop groups, pianist and composer Joe Sample, and jazz tenor-saxophonist Illinois Jacquet.
