South Central Houston Neighborhood

With nearby Interstate 45 and US Highway 59 going through it, South Central Houston has a lot going for it as a neighborhood of the city of Houston.

Although the area is well populated, the homes tend to be spaced far enough apart to allow for a bit of privacy. Most also have trees and bushes, giving even more of a private atmosphere to the neighborhood. At the same time, South Central Houston isn’t far from businesses, medical centers, or educational centers.

South Central Houston Community Health Center serves the neighborhood by offering walk-in health care. Conveniently near this health center is Riverside General Hospital. The hospital has been around for a long time, and was renovated in the 1980s and 1990s.

The community of South Central Houston is also near Texas Southern University and the University of Houston. Both universities encourage academic excellence. The schools are well known and give the neighborhood some well-deserved prestige.

Emancipation Park and Community Center is located less than a mile from Riverside General Hospital, off of Elgin Street. The free park has an indoor weight room and gym, plus an outdoor playground, a picnic area, lighted sports fields, a basketball court, a swimming pool, and even more for those with an interest in keeping physically fit, enjoying the outdoors, or giving children some playtime on the equipment provided.

There are museums to be found in this area, as well, and the Houston Citizens Chamber of Commerce is also located in this neighborhood.

The housing in South Central Houston includes apartments as well as homes. Many of these are low cost, which is helpful for the primarily low- to middle-income community.

One of the most well-known businesses in the area is Microsoft’s Houston office, although there are many other businesses to see to the needs of the community.
