Briarwood is on the western edge of Midland and one of the newer parts of the city. Development didn’t start in the area until after 1970. Many of the newer buildings, some of them upscale high rise apartment complexes, were built after 1995. Briarwood is framed by North Midland Drive to the east, Briarwood Avenue to the south and the beginnings of Mockingbird Lane to the north. Holiday Hill Road borders the west and beyond that there is little development. This gives Briarwood a slightly rural feel even though the attractions and services of the city are just minutes away.

Greathouse Elementary School on Greathouse Avenue and the Barney Greathouse School on Mathis Street are both in the neighborhood. Nearby churches include the Fairmont Church of Christ on North Midland Drive and St. Nicholas Episcopal Church on the Texas 250 Loop Frontage Road just east of Briarwood. Also on the Texas 250 Loop are a Wal-mart Supercenter and further east, the Midland Park Mall.

The neighborhood Fitness Bakery on Bluebird Lane and the Bushido Japanese Steak House on Briarwood Avenue are the closest restaurants. Farther out along the Texas 250 Loop are the Texas Roadhouse, Fazoli’s, Rosa’s Café & Tortilla Factory, and an assortment of fast food outlets. Sage Park on Bluebird Lane is the closest bit of urban open space, just east of Briarwood. Tee off at the Nueva Vista Golf Club, off of the Texas 250 Loop about three miles to the southwest. Follow the same road a bit farther south and take in a baseball game at the First American Bank Ballpark, home of the Midland Rockhounds, a minor league franchise in the Texas League that is a farm team for the Oakland Athletics.
