Greater Hobby Area Neighborhood
Near the southeast corner of the city of Houston is the Greater Hobby Area neighborhood. The Greater Hobby Area is home to the William P. Hobby Airport, one of the three airports that serve the Houston area. Neighborhoods Minnetex to the southwest and Golfcrest to the north serve as borders, with Interstate 45 Gulf Freeway serving as a boundary to the north. Most of the area has single-family homes, with a few condos and apartments sprinkled about.
Public elementary schools in the area include Garden Villas Elementary, Mading Elementary, Gregg Elementary, and Lewis Elementary. Middle schools options are Ortiz, Hartman, and Thomas, while the high schools in the Greater Hobby Area are Sterling High, Jones High, and Houston Can Charter Academy Hobby. Post-secondary education is available at Houston Community College or the University of Houston.
There are numerous shopping centers within four miles of Greater Hobby Area. Broadway Shopping Center is a small strip mall and is closest. Almeda Mall houses the bigger name chain stores. There are also Edgebrook and Belfort East Shopping Centers close by. For antique buffs, Almeda Antique Mall is a two-mile drive.
Parks are also plentiful in and around the Greater Hobby Area. Both Dow and Taub Parks are a little over a mile from the neighborhood, while Garden Villas Park and Reveille Park are within two miles of the area. Those who are interested in history can travel about ten miles and experience several excellent museums. These include the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, Blaffer Art Museum, Children’s Museum of Houston, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and The Houston Museum of Natural Science.
Emergency medical needs are served by three hospitals near Greater Hobby Area. The closest is the Texas Specialty Hospital, with Harris County Hospital District and Memorial Herman Southeast Hospital nearby, as well.
