Salt Lake County, Utah

The biggest thing in Salt Lake County is not Salt Lake, but the Wasatch Mountains in the eastern portion of the county. The area is a favorite of locals in summer and winter, but winter is the season that draws the tourists; snow in this region is called the “Greatest Snow on Earth” for its soft, powdery texture. In fact, the snow here was the deciding factor that led to Salt Lake City winning the bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Salt Lake County’s population at the 2010 census was 1,029,655. Its county seat and largest city is Salt Lake City, which is also the state capital.

The county has four ski resorts; Snowbird and Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon and Solitude and Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Alta is one of the oldest ski resorts in the country, opening its first lift in 1939. Alta offers a skiable area of 2200 acres and rises to 10,550 feet, with an average annual snowfall of 514 inches. It is one of three remaining ski resorts in America that prohibits snowboarders.

Brighton Ski Resort is located in Big Cottonwood Canyon, 30 miles from downtown Salt Lake City. Brighton is a favorite of locals; it boasts of being a “no-frills” resort whose only business is to provide skiers and snowboarders with top-notch trails. There is some lodging, dining, and shopping, but the facilities are not designed for tourists and most visitors do not stay at Brighton lodging.

Snowbird resort, opened in December 1971, is a year-round ski and summer resort (hiking is popular in the summer) located in the heart of the Wasatch National Forest, 29 miles from Salt Lake International Airport.

Solitude Mountain Resort is one of the smaller ski resorts near Salt Lake City, as is neighboring Brighton. Solitude has 64 trails on its 1,200 acres and a rise of 2,047 feet. This is a family-oriented mountain that offers a wider range of beginner and intermediate slopes than other Utah ski resorts. Seventy percent of its slopes are graded “beginner” or “intermediate.”

Most of the Salt Lake County’s snow usually falls from October through May.
